A Coral Helper story

Coral Helper Takes a Turn

Coral Helper was always helping. She helped carry books. She helped tie shoelaces. She saved seats and shared crayons and remembered everybody's birthday.

One morning Coral woke up with a sniffly nose and a tired, heavy feeling. "I can't stay home," she said. "Who will hand out the snacks? Who will help the new kid find the library?"

But her dad tucked her back into bed with a cup of warm honey water. "Today," he said, "it's your turn to be helped."

Coral didn't like that one bit. She worried all morning. Then, after lunch, there was a knock at the door.

It was her friends! Gold Guardian brought soup his grandpa made. Sage Listener brought a stack of books to read aloud. Amber Sunshine had made a card covered in glitter that said GET WELL, CORAL, WE MISS YOUR HELPING.

"Who handed out the snacks?" asked Coral. "We did," said Cobalt Captain. "I made a schedule."

"And the new kid?" "I showed her the library," said Sage. "She likes dinosaur books."

Coral felt something warm in her chest that wasn't the honey water. Her friends had learned to help, because she had shown them how.

"Thank you," she said, snuggling down. "I think I'll rest now." And she did.

The lesson: Taking care of yourself is part of taking care of others.
