Teacher pack
A free, ready-to-teach lesson for grades K–4 about noticing and appreciating differences. No student accounts, no data, no ads.
Learning goals
- Students can name one of their own strengths.
- Students can describe one way a classmate is different from them, kindly.
- Students can suggest how different strengths help a group.
These goals connect to the self-awareness, social awareness and relationship skills competencies in the CASEL framework for social and emotional learning.
45-minute lesson plan
- Warm-up (5 min): show the eight posters. Ask: which buddy looks like they'd be fun at recess? Why?
- Story (8 min): read one color buddy story aloud. Ask the three "talk about it" questions.
- Quiz (10 min): read the nine kids quiz questions aloud; students mark their answers on paper (A or B), then find their buddy. No devices needed.
- Make (12 min): students fill in the my color card printable.
- Share (10 min): in small groups, each student shares one superpower. Groups list how their mix of buddies could build a treehouse together.
Discussion questions
- Can someone be more than one color? (Yes! Everyone uses every color sometimes.)
- What would happen if everyone in our class were the same color?
- Which buddy would you ask for help with a hard puzzle? With a sad day? Why?
Important
- Let students choose a different buddy if they don't like their result.
- Never group, grade or seat students by color.
- This is play and conversation, not a psychological assessment.
