A Cobalt Captain story

Cobalt Captain Plans the Treehouse

Cobalt Captain had a plan. A very good plan. It was written on a big sheet of paper with numbers down the side: 1. Gather wood. 2. Measure. 3. Build the floor. 4. Build the walls. 5. Done!

"Everyone take a job," said Cobalt, handing out pencils and a measuring tape. The friends got to work, and the treehouse floor went up fast.

Then Violet Inventor tugged Cobalt's sleeve. "What if the treehouse had a rope bridge? And a pulley for snacks? And a window shaped like a star?"

Cobalt frowned. None of that was on the plan. "We don't have time," he said. Violet's face fell.

Cobalt looked at his list. Then he looked at Violet. He remembered something his grandma said: a captain listens to the crew.

"Okay," said Cobalt slowly. "Tell me more about the pulley."

Violet drew it. Emerald worked out how heavy a snack basket could be. Amber Sunshine named the bridge "The Wobbly Wonder." Cobalt added step 6 to the plan: Make it amazing.

By sunset the treehouse had four walls, a star window and a pulley that delivered apple slices to the top. It was better than Cobalt's plan. It was everybody's plan.

"Same time tomorrow?" asked Cobalt. "We need a step 7."

The lesson: A good plan has room for everyone's ideas.
